Annual Christmas Bird Count to be this weekend

The Missouri Department of Conservation is joining the National Audubon Society for the annual Christmas Bird Count this weekend.

MDC State Ornithologist Sara Kendrick says the event is to ensure that bird populations stay stable.

"The Christmas Bird Count is the longest running citizen effort to count birds in the non-breeding season. This is the 120th year and it was one of the first ways to survey birds that didn't involve harvesting them.  An ornithologist, Frank Chapman, in 1900 decided to take a small party out in the northeastern part of the U.S. and count birds."

Local bird counts include Grand River and Saint Joseph, both on December 14th. Participants should bring warm clothes, snacks, and binoculars. Birders of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, visit mdc.mo.gov.
